The way we perceive space between elements creates moments of action.
Located in Almada on Rua da Bela Vista, the building stands amidst neighboring blocks, creating an imposed barrier on the landscape. To overcome this monolithic character, a back-and-forth rhythm, openings, and closures, weaves through the structure. This building aims to activate a fresh approach to public space, encouraging residents to reclaim it as their own. The module isn’t a self-contained moment but a motion accommodating daily activities. Conceptually, the design proposal is a succession of walls and vertical elements that define uses through visual connections.
In this concept of space aggregation through a chain of uses, the wall’s role as a backdrop is paramount, oscillating between openness and enclosure. This interplay between planes and gaps is not about creating empty moments but about adding density through overlap, where time becomes part of spatial conception, habit definition, and space adaptation. It encompasses the public, collective, and private domains, aiming not to isolate but to reinterpret and connect in this suburban context, fostering a human component that seeks harmony within diversity, while valuing individual space.
